Rhino Day, World: September 22

02:20 AM | -
World Rhino Day aims to raise awareness of the plight of the five rhino species. First observed in 2011 and sponsored by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Lisa Jane Campbell championed the cause from the Chishakwe Ranch in Zimbabwe and Rhishja Cota-Larson. Because of their efforts, many non-profit organizations, zoos, and other related organizations have joined the campaign, making it a global phenomenon.

Rosh Hashanah (J): September 22-24

02:20 AM | -
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and the Feast of the Trumpets, marking the beginning of the Jewish faith’s High Holy Days. This two-day observance begins on the first day of Tishrei, the first month of the Jewish civil year, but the seventh month of its clerical year. Rosh Hashanah commences the harvest season and biblically celebrates the creation of Adam and Eve. During this time, the shofar (blowing of the rams’ horn) is trumpeted in the morning and evening. People eat food full of symbolism, including honey-dipped apples and light candles in the evening. Prayers are said, and people abstain from creative activities and work. Jewish religious holidays commence and end at sundown on the days listed. Rosh Hashanah is a national holiday in Israel. PLEASE NOTE: All Hebrew calendar months begin and end at sundown. LEEP Calendar marks Jewish months starting on their first full day. Observant people of the faith will observe the beginning of the month at sunset the day prior.

Spring Begins (Southern Hemisphere): September 22

Stormwater Awareness Week: September 22-26 (est)

02:20 AM | -
All communities have issues with rainwater runoff during heavy storms, but desert communities specifically struggle with this. It rains in deserts, and when it does, it pours! Excess water can quickly saturate the land, clogging sewers and initiating flash flooding in canyons. Stormwater Awareness Week educates the public about the dangers of stormwater, including flooding, and how to prevent pesticides, trash, oil, and other pollutants from entering the storm drains. Stormwater typically drains into the ocean, rivers, or lakes. Flash floods surprise dozens of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts yearly, resulting in injury and death.

Walk and Roll Dog Day, Ntl: September 22

02:20 AM | -
People aren't the only living beings on this planet that sometimes need a little help getting around due to paralysis or limb loss. Animals too. Created in 2011, National Walk & Roll Dog Day honors our canine companions that need ambulatory help, often in the form of wheelchairs. It's a day to strut your pal proudly and rejoice in the longevity veterinary science has created through animal wheelchairs.

Wedding Proposal Day (Fall): September 22

02:20 AM | -
Twice a year, Proposal Day® falls on the equinox, generating worldwide discussion among eligible singles seeking marriage. The day allows singles to press the issue if so inclined. This day also supports rescue animals in shelters for those not ready to marry. If you're not prepared to propose, you're encouraged to add to your family by adopting an animal. Not just dogs and cats but rabbits, birds, and other animals often find their way into shelters too. Can't have pets? Try a fish! Created and trademarked by John Michael O'Loughlin, check his site on this day to see who is named the most eligible bachelor and bachelorette in the world.

Macadamia Nut Day: September 4

02:20 AM | -
National Macadamia Nut Day honors the macadamia nut, which originated in Australia. Named after the chemist John Macadam (May 29, 1827 – September 2, 1865), who cultivated the nuts in Australia, macadamia nuts have many benefits, including being high in mono-unsaturated fats and dietary fiber. People eat macadamia nuts or include them in their baking to celebrate this day. Curiously, this day seems to fall on September 4 each year when the anniversary of the death of the nut’s namesake is on September 2. So much for logic.

Mawlid an-Nabi (M) (570 AD): September 4/5

02:20 AM | -
Mawlid an-Nabi, or Mawlid in Islam, is the day set aside for the birth of the Prophet Muhammed. Practicing Muslims usually follow the mention of his name with "Peace be upon him" or the initials PBUH. Mawlid occurs on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar, which is why it moves from year to year. The founder of the faith of Islam lived from 570 AD - June 8, 632 AD. His full name was Abū al-Qāsim Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim. His name is quite long, a tribal tradition in Arab and Persian cultures. Each "ibn" designates "son of" in parental lineage. The Prophet rests in Medina, Saudi Arabia, beneath the mosque known as "The Green Dome." Typically Muslims do not celebrate this day. Instead, it is a day of reflection and thought.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Day (AU): September 4

02:20 AM | -
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Day seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about this genetic disease. As a person ages, symptoms worsen, and fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children. This rare disease affects 1 in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60. Currently, there is no cure, and the disease does not skip generations.

Toronto International Film Festival (CA-ON): September 4-14 (est)

02:20 AM | -
ABOUT THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), one of the most prestigious and influential global film festivals, is a celebrated annual event showcasing diverse films from around the world. Held every September, TIFF transforms Toronto into a cinematic hub, attracting filmmakers, actors, critics, and fans alike. Founded in 1976, TIFF has grown from a small event called the Festival of Festivals into a significant platform for launching critically acclaimed and award-winning films. The festival screens various films across various categories, including narrative features, documentaries, shorts, and experimental works. Critical sections of the festival include Gala Presentations, Special Presentations, Masters, Contemporary World Cinema, and TIFF Docs, among others. TIFF is renowned for its audience-centric approach, with the prestigious People's Choice Award often serving as an early indicator of future Oscar success. Films like "Slumdog Millionaire," "La La Land," and "Nomadland" have all gained momentum and acclaim following their premieres at TIFF. In the global landscape of film festivals, TIFF holds a unique position. While it does not have a competitive jury awarding top prizes like Cannes or Venice, its timing at the beginning of the awards season and its strong industry presence make it a critical launchpad for films seeking international recognition. The festival's ability to attract significant premieres and influence on the awards circuit underscore its significance in the film industry. TIFF's commitment to diversity, innovation, and the celebration of cinema in all its forms ensures its continued relevance and importance, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the international film festival circuit.
