Janus had two faces, one looking forward and one looking back, making him an appropriate symbol for the transition from one year to the next, where one looks back at the past and forward to the future. This connection to Janus dates back to Roman times when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius is credited with adding January and February to an originally ten-month calendar
