Event Description

ZIP Code Day marks the 1963 anniversary of the adoption of the zip code system in the United States. This simple addition to addresses has tremendous economic importance and plays an essential role in allowing packages and letters to find their ultimate destination quickly. ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. The ZIP Code began as postal district numbers in London and Liverpool England. The system eventually spread throughout the world by the end of World War II.
